1 | Your phone isn’t rotting your brain—but cell death and fungi might. 🧠
While doom scrolling has gained a reputation for turning brains into mush, the real process of brain rot happens after we’re gone—and sometimes, not at all. Scientists are uncovering preserved brains that are hundreds or even millennia old, reshaping our understanding of human history. From autolysis to microbial activity, we’re only just learning what happens to our complex organ after death.

6 | Around the globe, a growing cadre of bee researchers is trying to measure and understand how bees change their behaviors to solve and survive new challenges. And that means dreaming up ever more outlandish obstacle courses. In one case, researchers in Finland are seeing if bumblebees can use a ball as a tool to reach a sugary reward. The results are helping deepen our understanding of insect intelligence.

7 | Video by Reuben Wu @reuben | At Abraham Lake in Alberta, Canada, I walk across clear winter ice above layers of methane bubbles trapped beneath the surface. They're formed by the decomposing organic matter at the bottom of the lake.
Each step became its own sound, the sharp crunch of spikes on ice that felt both solid and precarious.
The ice here was about 12 inches (30 centimeters) thick, but that measure is no guarantee of safety. I still had to move carefully and stay alert for weaker sections that could give way without warning.

9 | Photo by @beverlyjoubert | Watching this elephant in Zimbabwe’s Sapi Reserve, situated on the edges of the Zambezi River, the connection to water is unmistakable. And this is no coincidence. The ancestors of today's elephants once moved through swamps and river margins, creatures of wetter worlds. Even now, there are traces of that history: in the way elephants swim with ease, in their instinctive pull toward water, in how their lives are shaped by it. To survive, an elephant must drink hundreds of liters a day, and the animals can lose vast amounts (up to 10% of all the water in their bodies in a single day) when the heat grows intense. As rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns make water less certain all across Africa, elephants—with their sheer size and daily water demands—are especially vulnerable.
